Our popular NurtureYou Chair Yoga classes comprise a series of different seated stretching and strengthening exercises to activate feet, legs, hands, arms, core, back, neck region, eyes and the brain.
Each class normally includes one or two short Pranayama (working with the breath) practices to increase lung capacity and promote emotional wellbeing.
This is a safe and gentle approach to yoga, with no practice on the floor. It is ideal if you are an older adult, a complete beginner or if you have one or more conditions and/or restrictions.
The functional benefits of a seated yoga practice are to increase range of motion; encourage fluid breathing and postural alignment; improve fine motor skills; increase stability; and promote independence.
There is also the option for a stronger practice class if you would prefer that. This class has similar benefits to a mainly seated practice, but includes more sit-to-stand and standing exercises tailored to your particular fitness level and flexibility. The combination of postures and a slightly quicker pace involves some low to moderate aerobic exercise.
Our private, small group classes are socially distanced and adhere to Covid-19 secure guidelines throughout to keep everyone as safe as possible. In December 2021 I successfully completed the Unit 1 'The Physiology of Older Adults and Age-Related Conditions' of the British Wheel of Yoga's (BWY) Gentle Years Yoga© Level 4 training. I am now completing Unit 2 to become a registered BWY Gentle Years Yoga© Teacher later this year.
